Childhood and adolescence is a very difficult time for the chldren of today. There are many decisions to be made and many challenges facing them. Giving children the appropriate tools to make good decisions can sometimes be a parent's most difficult task.
Children should be approached and understood from a developmental perspective without being viewed as a miniature adult. Their world is one of concrete realities and their experiences are often communicated through their actions. Unlike adults, whose natural way of communication is verbalization, the young child communiates through play and activity.
Children's actions and behaviors are attempts to organize their experiences and their personal world. A child or adolescent's actions and behavior can reveal several things:
- What the child has experienced
- Reactions to what was experienced
- Feelings about what was experienced
- What the child wishes, wants or needs
- The child's perception of self.
